What are the advantages and disadvantages of DC transmission system?

  • 0

The bulk of electrical power in DC transmission is transmitted over long distances. DC operates by applying a constant voltage from which most of the system takes a constant electric current. Batteries which are widely accepted source of direct current and the majority of modern electronics needs direct current to operate.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of AC and DC transmission system. In the past, DC was used for electrical power transmission.

      Advantages of DC transmission:

      • In DC transmission, the power distribution is achieved with the support of two conductors.
      • No problem of phase displacement, inductance and capacitance in DC transmission system.
      • The corona losses and voltage drop in DC transmission are low as compared to AC transmission.
      • DC transmission lines have no skin effect on the conductors, and as a result, the conductor small cross-section area is usually used to influence the material saving directly.
      • In DC lines, there are no issue of system instability and also no difficulty in synchronizing.
      • No overlapping with other communication lines and system exists in the DC network.

      Disadvantages of DC transmission:

      • In DC transmission, it isn’t easy to produce high voltage. Also, the transformer cannot be used to step-up or step-down DC voltages.
      • Due to the communication issue, the generation at high DC voltage is complicated and cannot be used usefully at user ends.
      • The DC transmission line is more complicated and costly as compared to the AC transmission system.
