What are the advantages and disadvantages of AC transmission system?

  • 2

The AC transmission is commonly used to transfer power from power plants through transmission lines to end-users. With the help of step-up and step-down transformers, the power is transmitted from end to end. The voltage fluctuates in the alternating current system typically at a rate of 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

Pros and cons fo AC transmission

      Advantages of AC transmission:

      • AC transmission lines require three conductors for the transmission of power over long distances.
      • By using the step-up and step-down transformers, the level of the AC voltage can be increased or decreased.
      • The high voltage transmission can be achieved by using AC power which may reduce losses.
      • AC can generate high-level voltages.
      • AC substation repair and maintenance is easier and less expensive compare to the DC substation.

      Disadvantages of AC transmission:

      • The effect of inductance and capacitance can be seen in AC lines. Due to which continuous power losses occur when there is no load.
      • The skin effect happens only in AC transmission lines where it causes losses. This can be minimized by reducing the conductor cross-section area.
      • In the AC transmission line, the interface with other communication line is more as compared to DC transmission lines.
      • In the AC system, there are issues of system instability and synchronizing.
      • The losses due to corona occur in AC transmission system.
