2020 is expected to be an important year for rechargeable batteries.

• Lithium-ion batteries would see some challenges from alternative solutions such as micro capacitors, miniaturised solid-oxide fuel cells, graphene polymers, aluminium graphite and the nanowire technology and even sodium-based solutions by 2020 or beyond.
• The solid-state batteries may start powering electric vehicles (EV) if Toyota achieves its goal. Other manufacturers intend to enter the market between 2022 and 2025.
• Nikola Corporation also plans to unveil a new prototype battery in 2020. The newly designed battery would have four times high energy density and could cost 50% less of lithium-ion batteries.
• The use of lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics such as mobile phones is expected to increase further, driven by 5G technology.
• New batteries capacities are to be added in 2020. KORE Power, an Idaho-based lithium-ion battery-maker plans to open a 10GWh battery manufacturing plant in the US by 2020. SK Innovation Co, a South Korean energy and chemicals company, will start the commercial battery production in Komarom, Hungary, with 7.5GWh capacity in 2020.
• The expected fall in batteries costs would drive the energy storage market in 2020. The market price for batteries reached an average $150 per KWh in 2019 and is expected to down around $100/KWh.
