What is wireless display and does it works?

  • 0

Cables are traditionally used to share a display with another screen. Although these cables are evolving with time, first there were VGA cables which were then changed to HDMI cables. These cables relay the display of a small screen on a projector or TV, but they are now being replaced by WiDi.

Cables provide good display features, but the management of cables is difficult as it also requires replacement from time to time. To solve the issues of traditional cables, WiDi (wireless display) was introduced, by Intel in 2010, offers a big-screen display through a wireless connection from a compatible PC to a compatible projector or HDTV. It is also known as screen mirroring. The introduction of WiDi eliminates the need for a cable to be used for a display connection. The WiDi keeps evolved for five years, then in 2015, it became obsolete.

Miracast is also a wireless connection to display devices, such as PC, mobile phones, laptops, and tablet, on large screens, such as projector, and HDTV. Miracast is like HDMI over WiFi. Miracast is a certification program, which allows certified devices to communicate with each other. It also shows that Miracast does not need the same manufacturers for making a connection with each other.

For devices and display screens that do not support Miracast, adapters are available for them, which can provide a wireless connection using Miracast between devices that are not certified from Miracast certification. These adapters have to be plugged-in in USB ports, or HDMI port. It uses the WiFi direct standard, having a peer-to-peer connection between the devices. It supports the sharing of 1080p HD display, with 5.1 surround sound. NVidia also announced in 2013, that it would support Miracast in its devices.

Apple AirPlay, which is a protocol suite used to connect the devices wirelessly, that use IOS operating system such as iPhone, MacBook, and iPads, for a display on the big screen of Apple TV. AirPlay was introduced in 2010 and used as a third party software component for the companies that makes compatible products with Apple’s devices. Apple is making advancements in AirPlay since its introduction, and it announced an AirPlay 2 in 2017, which is the improved version of AirPlay.
