What is the purpose of using filters in electronic system?

  • 3

A filter is an electronic circuit network that can be built to alter, reshape or can refuse all unwanted electrical signal frequencies and to transfer only the appropriate signals.

In general terms, an electrical filter is a selective frequency system that passes only a defined frequency band and prevents signals from frequencies beyond the narrow band.

What does filter do and what are different types of filters?

There are mainly four types of filters which are low pass filter, high pass filter, band- pass filter and band-reject filter.

      Low-pass filter:

Low pass filter is the type of passive filter which attenuates only low-frequency signals from o Hz to its cut-off frequency. It rejects any higher frequency signals.

      High-pass filter:

High pass filter is another types of passive filter which permit only high-frequency signals from its cut-off frequency. It provides a constant gain above cut-off frequency and blocks those lower frequency signals.

      Band-pass filter:

Band-pass filter enables only a specific band of frequency signal to pass through and restrict the lower and higher frequencies on each side of this frequency band.

      Band-stop filter:

The relevant frequency bands are restricted and make the frequencies to be transferred beyond the array.

Power factor or power qualities are an important concept in the electrical network, and many electric utilities are quite worried about them. The power quality issue can occur in any electrical system due to the voltage, current or frequency change and may result in the equipment failure. Filters are mostly found in many electronic circuits.

The consumption of electricity around the world has risen considerably over the last decade. The demand for energy has also increased, and as a result, power quality becomes a significant factor. They are owing to the increasing demand for electrical resource there has been a significant rise in non-linear loads such as rectifier, variable speed drives, household machines and telecom system that uses switched-mode power supply (SMPS) power conversion technologies. Therefore, filter circuits are the solution which can conduct signal processing function to reduce these challenges.

A filter may eliminate all the unnecessary elements of the frequency from the electronic signal to provide a better signal. They can easily adjust the amplitude and phase characteristics of the signal with respect to frequency. Furthermore, the filter does not add additional frequencies to the input signal.
