What is the difference between static and dynamic IP addressing?

  • 0

IP (internet protocol) address is the layer 3 address which is a distinctive numerical symbol allotted to every device having the internet connectivity. These IP addresses are allotted in different ways, which includes static and dynamic IP addresses.

      Static IP addressing

      • As the name suggests, it is a type of addressing in which the operator manually apply the IP addresses to the hosts.
      • Static IP addresses remain the same and cannot be changed automatically, although it can be changed by the network operator or administrator.
      • Static IP addresses are considered as less secure, as it remains the same, and once it is compromised, it can be easy to compromise the associated device again.
      • Devices based on static IP address are traceable.
      • Static IP addresses are more stable as compared to dynamic, as it remains the same.
      • The cost of maintaining static IP addresses are higher as compare to dynamic addressing.
      • Static IP addressing is difficult to allot in case of big networks.
      • Static IP addressing gives less downtime.
      • Static IP addresses are usually configured by ISP (internet service provider).

      Dynamic IP addressing

      • In dynamic IP addressing, the IP addresses are provided to the hosts automatically, and it constantly changes.
      • Whenever a user tries to connect to the network, its IP address changes, due to using dynamic IP addressing.
      • Dynamic IP addressing is more secured as compared to static IP address, as it changes continuously and once it is compromised, it will be difficult to compromise the different IP address again.
      • Dynamic IP addressing is easy to allot and do not depends on the network size.
      • The devices that are based on dynamic IP addressing are non-traceable.
      • Dynamic IP addressing is less stable as compared to static IP address, due to the continuing changing feature.
      • The cost of maintaining dynamic IP addressing is less than that of a static IP address. When dynamic IP addresses are assigned to a device, it creates overheads and gives more downtime as compared to static IP address.
      • Dynamic IP addressing is usually configured through DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).
