What is the difference between RO, UV and UF purifiers?

  • 0

Clean water is extremely important in our daily life because it keeps us hydrated all day and helps us to preserve our health. Tap water is no longer a safe source of water despite the extensive contamination of water bodies.

In several cases, people have been sick because of drinking tap water. The market offers many types of water purifier technologies using different water treatment systems.

The common types of water purifiers are Reverse Osmosis (R0), Ultra Violet (UV) and UF (Ultra Filter).

Difference between RO, UV and UF water purifier systems

      RO Water Purifier

This mechanism transfers water molecules through the semi-permeable membrane. In response, it will allow only water molecules to travel across the membrane, leaving dissolved salts and other contaminants behind. Therefore, the RO water filtered is free of harmful bacteria and toxins that have been dissolved.

Key differences between RO water purifier when compared to UV and UF water purifier.

      • RO purifiers need electricity to increase water pressure. This system only works with the high water level.
      • RO purifiers have an integrated pre-filtration system, which deals with polluted and muddy water.
      • Dissolved salts and contaminants can be extracted from the water by RO water purifiers.
      • RO systems are more hygienic which can kill and remove all the bacteria along with virus from the supply water.

      UV water purifier

In a UV water filtration system, the ultraviolet (UV) rays are used to remove the harmful bacteria from the water. Thus, the water is absolutely disinfected from pathogenic agents.

The key differences between UV water purifier in comparison with RO and UF water purifier.

      • UV purifiers also need electricity to operate, but they can work with normal water pressure.
      • UV filters don’t work with muddy water. The water needs to be clear in order to destroy the bacteria properly. Therefore, UV filters might not be a good choice for areas where the water has high sediment content.
      • UV filters can destroy all the pathogens in the water, but their dead bodies remain in the water.
      • UV water filters cannot isolate dissolved substances from water. For UV to operate, water must be clear.

      UF water purifier

Ultrafiltration is an array of membrane filtrations that lead to the separation via semi-permeable membrane of forces such as pressure or concentration gradients. It can be used to extract particulates and macromolecules from raw water to produce drinking water.

The key differences between UF water purifier in comparison with UV and RO water purifier.

      • No power is required to operate the ultrafiltration process. The UF membranes have somewhat bigger pores than the RO membrane filters. They can kill bacteria, viruses and germs from water, but they are ineffective in removing total dissolved solids (TDS).
      • The benefit of UF is that it needs minimal maintenance and that the filters can last long. They do not handle heavy metals and water at high TDS output.
      • The UF water purifier can work with normal tap water pressure and also with muddy, dirty turbid water.
      • UF differs from UV in that it is not used to remove impurities with ultraviolet radiation.
