  • 1

The distinction between notebooks and laptops is a little blurred. Both seem to have different features and are designed for different purposes.

Laptops are typically larger than notebooks and designed to substitute your desktop computer so that it can sit on your lap.

Notebooks are smaller and lighter, making it easy to carry compared to laptops.

The differences between the two kinds of portable computer are as follow:

      Laptop:

      • Size: Laptops have different models and usually come in different sizes. Most of the model displays are in between 10 and 20 inches.
      • Weight: The weight range varying between 3 and 10 pounds.
      • Usage: Mobility is the primary use that simulates the extra resilience of a personal device.
      • Processing capacity: Laptops are usually correlated with higher computing capacity than notebooks, normally having a RAM capacity of 1-16 GB. Some models offer a processing capacity of 32GB RAM.
      • Storage space: Laptops typically have SSD now but does not contain a lot of capacity. Some models have 128GB of SSD storage which is hardly enough. But more pricey versions come with up to 1 TB of storage room. There are exceptional models which have a dual storage system which means that they can feature an SSD and an HDD both.
      • Main Manufacturers: Apple, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP, Samsung, Sony and MSI.

      Notebook:

      • Size: Notebooks usually come to near personal digital assistant (PDA) scale in the shape of actual notebooks and is 3 inches or less in thickness.
      • Weight: As compared to laptops, these devices are much lighter, which is typically less than 5 pounds in weight.
      • Usage: The major application is mobility and a personal computer with extra durability.
      • Processing capacity: In contrast to laptops, notebooks computer are completely different in processing capacity. The RAM memory of notebooks is much smaller ranging between 1 GB and 4GB (4GB are particularly rare). Notebooks are also available in laptops models, but the size factor is becoming bigger.
      • Storage space: Notebooks are almost exclusively restricted to SSD owing to the fact that it is a much smaller type of storage that requires less power.
      • Main Manufacturers: HP, Apple, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Dell.

      • Netbooks are portable variants of laptops with minimal software and data storage capabilities. They are perfect for people with Web applications but compete with essential tools like Microsoft Word and Excel.
      • A netbook is a compact handheld device (mini desktop) with less room for computing and storage than a laptop computer.
      • Netbooks may also be known as ultra-portable, mini-notebooks, sub-notebooks, mini-thin clients, ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) or cloud books.
      • Netbooks are incredibly simple to use, and most do not include a CD/DVD drive. Though, they have a tiny keyboard for word processing and other inputs.
      • Netbooks were originally produced as secondary computing alternatives and were geared to the education industry. Nevertheless, they have become increasingly common, particularly among students, bloggers and those who mainly use a laptop to access the Internet. Apart from this, they are also ideal for cloud computing.

There is an ultrabook which is a relatively recent type of handheld computers. They are small, compact, elegant and quick. Typically, ultrabook does not have a CD / DVD drive or a hard disk.

It functions much like a USB drive with a computer and a keyboard. Ultrabook is lightweight laptops, providing quick and powerful battery backups which use lower electricity.

These portable devices don’t have that much capacity and don’t have an expandable loading space for a solid-state drive.  Ultrabook uses strong components and to keep the leanness, it uses a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of a Hard Drive.
