The difference is based on the coverage area of the networks.

      Internet

It is the short form of internetworks. Internet is a public network, which has the worldwide collection of interconnected groups. It shows that the internet has a large number of connected devices. The security of the internet usually depends on device connection with the type of network. Internet is not owned by anyone.

The information on the internet can be shared across the globe. As it is a public network, so it is accessible to everyone around the world. It uses internet communication protocols, policy for communication between devices. Prime examples of the internet include the World Wide Web (WWW).

      Intranet

The intranet is basically a private network of LANs and WANs that belongs to a specific organisation. Intranet can only be accessed by designated people within the organisation, and it is usually not accessible to people outside the organisation. As it is a private network, so the security of the network is usually firewall protected.

It uses organisational policies for communication in the network. The information shared on the network can only be accessible within the organisation. The intranet is usually owned by a particular organisation. One of the examples of an intranet is an internal operations network of an organisation.

      Extranet

The extranet is also a private network of LANs and WANs, but the difference is that extranet can be accessed outside of the organisation. As it is a private network, so selected users should be connected. The extranet is secured by firewalls, which also separates it from the internet. The policies used for communication in extranet include organisational policies, internet policies, and contractual policies.

Only authorised users have access to the network. The information on extranet is shared between the organisation employees and also the authorised outside users. One or more organisations usually own the extranet. One of the examples of an extranet is a collaborative network between two organisations.
