      Galfan

Galfan is a type of metallic coated steel. It is made through a process of coating cold rolled steel with 95% zinc and 5% aluminium and mischmetal. Galfan was created in 1981 by a joint research project led by the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO) and leading steel producers.

Currently, the Galfan ownerships and licensing rights are with Galfan Technology Center Inc. (GTC) located at University of Pittsburgh Applied Research Centre, Pittsburgh, US.

Galfan provides extra corrosion protection with lighter coating weight. It has improved formability over regular free zinc coatings, for instance, HDG. Owing to its high aluminium content, Galfan does not carry the characteristic “spangle” of conventional galvanized coatings.

The key benefits of Galfan are the superior corrosion resistance, aesthetics and adhesion. It is mainly used in construction (roofing and cladding) and appliances.

      Galvalume

Galvalume is a type of metallic coated steel. It is made through a process of coating cold rolled steel with 55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon. It was developed in 1972. BIEC International Inc, a subsidiary of BlueScope Steel, is the worldwide licensor of the technology.

The key benefits of the Galvalume coated sheet steel are superior corrosion resistance, high heat reflectivity, superior aesthetics and adhesion.

In the construction sector, Galvalume is mainly used as roofing sheets, especially low-slope roofing on an industrial building. Galvalume is mostly used as unpainted roofing sheets, though it can also be used a pre-painted sheet when a more decorative finish is desired. As low-slope roofing, the average expected life of Galvalume sheets is 20 years. The other application includes appliances and car parts.
