What is the difference between a conventional generator and inverter generator?

  • 7

In electrical generation system, a generator is a single unit that transforms motive power (mechanical energy) into electrical power for external circuit service or the transmission and distribution over the power line to residential, industrial and commercial users.

There are various ideal portable generators. But consumers get confused in purchasing an inverter and conventional generator because they think these two terms refer to the same thing.

Major differences between the inverter and conventional generators:

      Conventional generators:

      • The conventional generate will only generate electricity in the form of alternating current (AC).
      • Conventional generators have been used for several years. The working of convention generator is done through the burning of different fuels such as diesel, gasoline or propane. The usage of these fuels power the motor and generates electricity through the alternator.
      • This type of generator is quite bulky and heavy due to their bigger fuel tank. Therefore, they need a wider area to position it.
      • These types of generators are normally boisterous and operate at stead speed of 3600 rpm to generate energy. The speed of the engine will stay steady in order to produce energy.
      • Conventional generators do not give simultaneous links because they produce more electricity. In other words, they require different power cables to connect them to their output and can’t be combined with the same units.
      • They have less efficiency compared to inverter generators.
      • Conventional generators release more toxic gasses into the atmosphere.

      Inverter generators:

      • The inverter generators can supply energy in three-phase foam that can be from AC to DC and then back to stable AC.
      • Inverter generators are a fairly modern development. It is composed of engine, alternator, rectifier and inverter. The fuel drives the motor of the engine that is connected to an alternator to generate high-frequency 3-phase AC which must be rectified and to be collected by the built-in inverter that has an input DC. The inverter then takes the DC power and transforms it into a stable AC power and can be used in different electrical appliances.
      • An inverter generator is compact and smaller in size for the amount of power they can carry as compared to conventional generators since they do not require large fuel tanks as generators.
      • The inverter generator provides a parallel connection in which two inverter generators can be linked to each other to double power capacity.
      • On the flip side, the inverter will change the amount of power generated by using microprocessors. This ensures that the system will adjust its power output based on the load applied, rendering it quieter than the generator.
      • The inverter generators are much more efficient in contrast to conventional generators.
      • The inverter generators enable the release of less toxic gasses.
