What is the difference between conventional and smart transmitter?

  • 2

Transmitters are essential components for measuring variable in different industrial application. The smart transmitter has gained significance due to the demand from various industrial applications as their performance is precise and reliable.

The smart instrument becomes extremely advanced automated interface devices which have far greater exposure to power facilities. Many conventional transmitters are replaced with the smart transmitter, but still, various industrial applications use it particularly at risky locations.

      Smart transmitters Vs traditional transmitters

      Conventional transmitter:

      • A conventional transmitter is the collection of electronic components that are used to transmit a signal in the form of electromagnetic waves.
      • In a conventional transmitter, the limited loop current is operated by a conventional 4-20mA transmitter and only provides a variable signal to the device. They operate on the induced electromagnetism theory of the basic loop current, which does not require digital reading.
      • The range ability of these transmitters is 5:1 compared to smart transmitters.
      • Owing to the analogue nature, the zero period change isn’t a feasible choice in conventional transmitters. Thus, the reading on traditional transmitter deviates by 2-3 per cent of the set reading value.

      Smart transmitter:

      • Smart transmitters often play the same function as a conventional transmitter, but they operate on the microprocessor feature for the transmission of a signal.
      • The configuration adjustment may be made directly via the smart transmitter utilizing the keypad or touch provided screen or by using the High Address Remote Transducer (HART) protocol. In contrast to the conventional transmitter, it can take zero periods reading and even provides frequency shift keying (FSK).
      • The scale of a smart transmitter is over 100:1, which allow these transmitter high accurate without any adjustment.
      • In the case of smart transducers self-assembly loop recognition is done during signal processing, so zero value is applied while decoding. This boost the efficiency of the smart transmitters.
