Both Android and iOS operating systems are quite different from each other due to structure, use, security, and application development. Andriod and iOS are the two common operating systems for smartphones.
Some of the differences between Android and iOS are explained below.
Android Operating System
Android was developed by Google on 23rd Sep 2008, with the first version Android 1.0 and the current latest Android is 10. Android is used by various top mobile brands such as Oppo, Samsung, Honor, Xiaomi, and Vivo. Android is based on Linux kernel, and its structure consists of four layers, such as application layer, framework layer, middleware layer and kernel layer.
Android layers are divided into five sections, called Linux kernel, android runtime, libraries, application framework and applications. Android makes user interface, kernel, and few standard apps open source for consumers and supports applications from various app stores such as Google app store, Galaxy Apps and Aptoide.
As Andriod is an open-source platform which also increases the security threats, so there are security updates available every month to enhance the security of Android system. Android systems are tending to slow down after some usage.
iOS Operating System
It was developed by Apple in 2007, which was at first called iPhone OS 1, and now its latest version is released as iOS 13.2.3. The usage of IOS is limited to only Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV.
The structure of iOS operating system is quite different from Android. Although it also has a layered structure, it contains the intermediary layer which has the application to stop the direct interaction between hardware and applications.
The layers in the iOS operating system include Core OS, Core Services, Media, and Cocoa Touch. The kernel of iOS is not open source, but it has some open source components. It does not support the third-party app stores applications as it has security risks, and iOS is mainly focused on providing security to its customers.
It will only support third-party apps when it is jailbroken. The speeds of iOS base phones are consistent unless they are too old and Apple cancel their support for further updates.
Apple and iOS:
Apple is one of the biggest technology companies in the world. Its iPhone brand is one of its popular products used all over the world.
The operating system used by Apple mobile phones is called iOS. Apple also has other products such as ipads, iwatch which also use iOS operating system.
Google and Android:
On another hand Google parent company Alphabet is competing directly against iOS and using its own operating system called Android. Google operating system Android is open-source software and many other smart phones companies are also using Android as their operating systems such as Samsung, Sony, Motorola and LG.
The following table show the key aspects which differentiate iOS from Andriod.
