What are the types of solar inverters?

  • 1

The rising demand in the renewable energy sector has substantially supported the solar energy sector. The solar energy market has now become an essential part of the global energy supply. Like many other components, solar inverter or photovoltaic (PV) inverter performs a crucial function and can be resembled the brain in the solar energy network.

The growing demand for power is an important factor behind the growth of solar inverters.

A solar inverter is a type of converter that transforms the output of variable direct current (DC) into the usable alternating current (AC) energy that can be fed into the commercial electric grid or can be utilised off-grid electrical network. It simply boosts the performance and durability of the solar energy grid. Solar inverters utilise the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm to achieve the best potential output form the PV collection.

There is plenty of well-known manufacturer of solar inverters all over the world. However, there are a few types of solar inverters which are commercially available in the market including the following:

      String inverter

A solar panel is placed in a row and is arranged as a string. Many strings are linked to a single string inverter. For residential usage, these are the most frequent type of inverters. String inverters may also be combined with a power optimisation algorithm, a choice that is gaining popularity. Power optimisers are module-level control electronics indicating that they are module-level mounted such that each solar panel has one.

      Central inverters

These inverters are very much identical to string inverters but they are much wider and can accommodate more panel lines. They are not appropriate for the residential sector and are usually used for large solar power plants or large commercial installations.

      Micro inverter

Micro inverters are gaining popularity in the solar industry market due to their smaller and compact size, and are also portable with considerable output. These inverters provide all the characteristics of central converters and are a reasonable option for both residential and industrial applications.

      Hybrid inverters

This inverter is also classified as a multi-mode inverter which enables batteries to be connected into the solar power grid. This communicates with the battery by a process known as DC coupling.

According to KnowTraces, the global solar power electricity generation capacity is expected to reach 1086.54 GW by 2028.

Countries such as France, Germany, India, Italy and Japan are focusing on the growing usage of solar energy sources to satisfy the growing need for power.

In 2019, Italy and Germany set a goal of achieving 50GW and 98 GW of solar power production capacity by the end of 2030 to increase their renewable energy share in their overall electricity generation. Thus, increasing solar power installations are projected to encourage the growth of the global demand for solar inverters.
