What are the pros and cons of stepper motor?

  • 1

Stepper motor is an electromechanical device which is used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. These motors are brushless DC synchronous motors which move in discrete mechanical steps. They have several coils that are grouped into classes know as phases. Stepper motors can move one step ahead at a time by energising each phase in sequence.

Stepper motors have several various size, types and electrical characteristics. However, these motors have many advantages and disadvantages, which are:

      Advantages:

      • The angle of motor rotation is proportional to the number of input pulses.
      • Stepper motor does not need any feedback. They are also the position transducers.
      • At low-speed stepper motors exerts a very good torque, are excellent for holding position and also likely to have a long lifeline.
      • They can work in AC or DC drives and do not suffer from vibration.
      • Stepper motor has excellent starting stopping or reversing response.
      • The stepper motors do not need a sensor for detecting the positioning of the motor due to internal configurations. Although the motor moves by doing steps and by counting up these steps, at a specified period, the users can get the position of the motor.
      • They are very stable and can drive a wide range of frictional and inertial loads.

      Disadvantages:

      • Stepper motor has low torque to inertia ratio and is very noisy at high speeds.
      • Resonance generation can occur in this type of motor if the control is improper.
      • Stepper motor has low power density and has low output power in terms of size and weight.
      • In high-performance configuration the stepper motor becomes hot
