Iron Ore is basically oxides of Iron (Fe).
Ore compositions of commercial significance are:

      • Magnetite Fe3O4 – 73% iron
      • Hematite Fe2O3 – 70% iron
      • Goethite (FeO(OH))-  63% iron
      • Limonite (FeO(OH).n(H2O))- 63% iron Fe
      • Siderite (FeCO3)-  43% iron

The balance is mainly oxygen as iron oxides, however, all ores contain impurities, notably silica (SiO2), sulphur (S) and phosphorus (P).
Fe contents in iron ore vary across the region. The average iron (Fe) content of iron ore in major countries is:

        • Brazil:   65 – 67%
        • Australia: 62 – 65%
        • India:   55 – 60%
        • USA/Canada 55 – 60%
        • China:   20 – 30%

Three types of iron ore are used in blast furnaces: fines, lump and pellets.

Iron ore content varies with by country as well as the nature of deposits.  The below image shows the Fe contents based on the depth of two types of deposits: Supergene iron ore and hydrothermal hematite deposits.
